GENEVA, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Swiss police confirmed that the shooting on Sunday at a rave party in Aarau, the capital of Switzerland's northern canton of Aargau, has been classified as a "rampage", the authorities of the Aargau canton said on Wednesday.
At a media briefing on Wednesday afternoon, the authorities of the Aargau canton provided an update on the investigation into the shooting which left one person dead and six others injured.
Cantonal police arrested a 43-year-old Swiss national on Monday, whom authorities say with "near certainty" is the perpetrator.
The suspect, a resident of the Swiss canton of Jura with no migration background, turned himself in to Jura cantonal police after the attack. He has no connection to Aarau and was unknown to authorities prior to the incident.
Police have confirmed that he acted alone and there is no longer any danger to the public.
According to the investigation, the man drove his car to the parking lot near the Aarau racecourse, walked to the rave, and then fired more than 40 rounds indiscriminately from a Kalashnikov-type assault rifle into the crowd. He also fired at a departing vehicle as he moved back towards the parking lot.
Inside the suspect's vehicle, police seized three firearms registered in his name: a Kalashnikov-type assault rifle (AK-74) and two pistols.
When asked about where the weapons were acquired, police commander Michael Leupold stated that they could not disclose this information, noting that the purchase occurred 20 years ago.
The suspect told interrogators that he had been feeling unwell for a long time. Prosecutor Christoph Ruedi confirmed that there are indications the suspect may have been suffering from psychological issues, though no medical records have yet been obtained. A clear motive has not yet been established, and a psychiatric evaluation has been ordered.
The suspect has been placed in pre-trial detention on charges including intentional homicide, murder, multiple counts of endangering life, and violations of the firearms act. ■
