BEIJING, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- China stands ready to work with the international community to develop more artificial intelligence (AI) public goods useful for the prohibition of chemical weapons, expand cooperation in AI technology fields, and help developing countries bridge digital skills and intelligence gaps.
Vice Minister of Industry and Information Technology Xie Yuansheng made the remarks at the opening of a four-day international workshop on AI empowering chemical safety and security management on Tuesday in Hangzhou, capital city of east China's Zhejiang Province.
Xie noted that AI has brought both new opportunities and challenges to the high-quality development of the chemical industry and the enforcement of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).
He said the Chinese government attaches great importance to implementation of the CWC, has been deeply advancing the "AI Plus" initiative, and is making efforts to foster a new AI ecosystem for CWC implementation that is enabled by technology, coordinated by all stakeholders, transparent and trustworthy.
"China will work with the rest of the international community to jointly enhance capabilities in preventing and controlling risks concerning chemical safety and security management, and make greater contributions to maintaining lasting world peace and promoting sustainable development," Xie added.
Themed "Trustworthy AI for responsible use," the workshop features keynote lectures, roundtable discussions, tabletop exercises and site visits.
It has drawn nearly 50 participants from 31 countries, with 15 experts from 15 international and domestic organizations delivering on-site or online lectures.
The CWC entered into force in 1997 to ban the development, production, use, stockpiling and transfer of chemical weapons. ■
