Chinese shares close lower Wednesday

BEIJING, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.97 percent to 3,941.39 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.88 percent lower at 13,611.55 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by these two indices stood at around 1.79 trillion yuan (about 264 billion U.S. dollars), down from 2.03 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.

Shares in the defense industry and consumer electronics sectors led the gains, while agriculture and non-ferrous metals stocks were among the top losers.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 2.39 percent to close at 3,312.24 points on Wednesday.

The STAR Composite Index, which reflects the performance of stocks on China's sci-tech innovation board, closed 1.37 percent lower on Wednesday at 1,906.64 points.
