QUITO, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Three people were killed and another was injured early Monday in an armed attack in Ecuador's southwestern coastal city of Guayaquil, police said.
At around 4 a.m. local time (0900 GMT), four armed men arrived on two motorcycles and opened fire in the port city's northern district of Pascuales, in the Barrio Lindo neighborhood. The injured was taken to hospital and no arrest has been made so far, local media reported, citing National Police.
On June 16, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa declared a 60-day state of emergency in 10 provinces and three municipalities, citing serious internal unrest. On Aug. 14, he extended the measure for 30 days. Guayaquil is among the areas covered by the measure.
Ecuador has been under a declared "internal armed conflict" against organized crime groups linked to drug trafficking since January 2024. ■
