BERLIN, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Werder Bremen have signed Dutch midfielder Youri Regeer on loan from Ajax until the end of the season, strengthening their options in central midfield following a long-term injury to Jens Stage, the Bundesliga club announced on Monday.
The 23-year-old arrives after Stage suffered a serious thigh muscle injury that is expected to keep him sidelined for several months, prompting Bremen to reinforce an area weakened by his absence.
Regeer made 25 appearances for Ajax last season, featuring predominantly as a defensive midfielder while also being deployed at right-back.
The former Netherlands youth international began playing at SV Zandvoort before spells with Rijnsburgse Boys and ADO Den Haag preceded his move into Ajax's academy in 2017. He progressed to the Amsterdam club's senior side before joining FC Twente in 2023 and returning to Ajax two years later.
Regeer said talks with Bremen officials had strengthened his desire to make the move to Germany. "I had very good talks with the people in charge at Werder," he said. "Bremen are a big club and the Bundesliga is one of the best leagues in the world." ■
