TOKYO, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Japan's industrial output in July edged up 0.1 percent from the previous month, as stronger semiconductor-related production was offset by weakness in transport equipment, government data showed Monday.

The uptick came on the heels of an upwardly revised 1.9 percent gain in June, according to a preliminary report released by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

The seasonally adjusted index of production at factories and mines stood at 104.7 against the 2020 base of 100.

Ten of 15 industrial sectors covered in the report saw output increases in July, including production machinery, which was boosted by stronger exports of semiconductor manufacturing devices.

Transport equipment excluding motor vehicles was among the four sectors that declined, while electric machinery and information and communication electronics equipment held steady.

Based on a survey of manufacturers, the ministry expects output to climb 6.4 percent in August and contract 4.2 percent in September.
