SUVA, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Fiji recorded an increase in the number of businesses operating across the country last year, with 20,563 active establishments registered, according to the latest data from the Fiji Bureau of Statistics.
The Experimental Statistical Business Register showed that the transport and storage sector recorded the strongest growth, increasing by 40.5 percent compared with 2024, the bureau said in a statement on Monday.
Wholesale and retail trade remained Fiji's largest business sector, with 7,042 establishments, representing an 11 percent increase from the previous year.
Accommodation and food services establishments grew by 15.7 percent, while the manufacturing sector recorded a 9 percent increase.
The education sector recorded marginal growth of 0.2 percent.
Sole traders were the most common form of business, accounting for 9,489 establishments, followed by private limited companies with 7,755.
The data provides an indication of business activity across Fiji as the island nation continues to strengthen private-sector participation in the economy.
Tourism, retail, transport, manufacturing and other service industries play important roles in Fiji's economy, while small and medium-sized enterprises account for a significant share of businesses operating across the country.
The Bureau of Statistics said the register covers active businesses and other entities involved in producing goods and services in Fiji. ■
