TOKYO, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks ended mixed Monday, with late buying of select tech stocks helping claw back some of the day's earlier losses.
The benchmark 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 93.63 points, or 0.14 percent, from Friday at 66,311.93, after briefly dipping below the 65,000 line.
The broader Topix index, meanwhile, closed 9.58 points, or 0.23 percent, higher at 4,156.29.
Heavyweight technology shares declined in early trading, tracking losses among their U.S. counterparts late last week, while a rise in crude oil prices also weighed on investor sentiment.
Buying picked up in the afternoon, however, with some domestic demand-linked stocks and artificial intelligence- and semiconductor-related shares drawing interest on the strength of solid earnings, which helped Tokyo shares recover part of their losses, analysts said. ■
