781 dead, 2,502 still missing in mudslide disaster in Nepal: authorities
Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said that as of 6:00 p.m. local time on Sunday, 781 bodies had been recovered from mudslide-hit areas, with 2,502 people still missing.
Meanwhile, the Nepal Tourism Board said that a total of 591 foreign nationals are still out of communication as of the same time.
Chinese relief supplies arrive in Nepal
Carried by two Y-20 transport planes, Chinese relief supplies and four Chinese rescue experts arrived at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, Nepal, at about 7 a.m. local time on Sunday to assist in disaster relief efforts.
The two aircraft departed from Chengdu, China, earlier in the morning and arrived in Nepal after a flight of about three hours.
The relief supplies, including tents, blankets, sleeping bags, hardtack and emergency kits, were handed over to the Nepali side at the airport.
Iran's IRGC says several killed, wounded in U.S. attack on Larak Island, vows "punishment"
Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) said multiple military personnel and civilians were killed or wounded Sunday night in a "U.S.-Israeli" attack on Iran's southern Larak Island in Hormozgan province.
In a statement on its official news outlet Sepah News, the IRGC vowed that the attack would be responded to "with punishment for the aggressor."
More than 20 may be missing after flash flood in U.S. Grand Canyon: authorities
More than 20 people may be missing or unaccounted for following a flash flood in Grand Canyon National Park in the U.S. state of Arizona, authorities said Sunday.
The "significant flash-flood event" occurred in Bright Angel Canyon and the Phantom Ranch area on Saturday, the U.S. National Park Service said in a news release. It urged "anyone who knows of hikers or backpackers who were in the inner canyon along the Bright Angel Creek corridor on August 29, as well as anyone who had a campground reservation in the affected corridor, to provide information to the National Park Service Investigative Services Branch."
At least 7 dead after passenger ferry capsizes off northern Cyprus
At least 7 people have died, and 23 others remained missing after a passenger ship capsized off Kyrenia in northern Cyprus on Sunday afternoon, according to local media.
The vessel, identified as the Express and operated by Filo Jet, was carrying 267 people when it was caught in a storm and capsized off the coast of Kyrenia shortly after departing the port, according to Cyprus media outlet Philenews.
Icelandic gov't not to pursue further EU accession talks: PM
Icelandic Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir said on Sunday that the current government would not pursue further talks on resuming Iceland's accession to the European Union (EU), after a Saturday referendum saw more voters against the accession negotiations.
During a press conference, she said the outcome of the election will be respected and no further accession negotiations will be entered into during the term of the ruling government. ■
