KABUL, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- A total of 1,680 Afghan refugee families, comprising 8,649 individuals, have returned to Afghanistan from neighboring Pakistan and Iran over the past five days, the High Commission for Addressing Returnees' Problems announced on Monday.
The returnees reentered the country through several strategic border crossings, according to the commission.
All returning families received immediate assistance, including food supplies, drinking water, healthcare services, and free transportation.
Afghanistan has an estimated 6 million citizens living abroad, the vast majority in Iran and Pakistan, with a significant proportion lacking formal documentation. ■
