JERUSALEM/GAZA, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- An Israeli airstrike killed at least two Palestinians, including a child, in Deir al-Balah in central Gaza on Sunday, Palestinian media reported, while Israel's military said the attack targeted a Hamas militant.
In a statement, the military identified the man as Hassam Osama Hussein Nasir, whom it said belonged to Hamas' armed wing and had been planning attacks against Israeli troops. It did not comment on the reported death of the child.
Meanwhile, a senior official of the Palestinian National Liberation Movement (Fatah) urged the international community to take practical steps to halt Israeli violations in the Gaza Strip.
Munzer al-Hayek, Fatah spokesman in Gaza, told Voice of Palestine radio that the spread of diseases, coupled with shortages of medicines and medical treatment, has turned daily life into a continuous struggle for residents in the strip.
He also urged the international community to take Israel to international courts and support accountability efforts for alleged violations and crimes against the Palestinian people.
According to Gaza's health authorities, 1,318 Palestinians have been killed and 4,375 others injured in the Gaza Strip since the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took effect in October 2025.
The overall death toll in the Gaza Strip since Oct. 7, 2023, has risen to 73,454, with 174,486 others injured, according to the authorities. ■
