NIAMEY, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Sustained gunfire and explosions were heard in several areas of Niamey, the capital of Niger, in the early hours of Saturday, according to local residents.
Gunshots were heard in the direction of Diori Hamani International Airport, said a local resident. The cause and nature of the incident remain unclear.
Nigerien government and military authorities have not yet issued any official statement on the incident. ■
