HARARE, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Zimbabwe police on Saturday confirmed the deaths of 27 people in a road accident near the town of Chivhu on Friday night.
Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi said in a statement that the accident occurred about 132 km from the capital, Harare, along Masvingo Road and involved a commuter omnibus and a haulage truck.
The foreign-registered truck was allegedly attempting to overtake another vehicle, while the commuter omnibus was carrying church congregants traveling from Dema to Mvuma for a church conference, the spokesperson said.
According to the police, most road traffic accidents in the southern African country are caused by negligent driving and unroadworthy vehicles. ■
