KUNMING, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Heavy rainfall has triggered severe flooding in Mohan Town in southwest China's Yunnan Province, with a reservoir at risk of breaching, authorities said Saturday.
From Friday afternoon to Saturday morning, heavy rainstorms battered Mengla County in Xishuangbanna, with Mohan Town under Mengla recording a maximum 24-hour rainfall of 187.5 millimeters, leading to flooding in the area.
The Yantang Reservoir in Mohan's Molong Village has overflowed and faces a potential breach, prompting local authorities to evacuate over 2,200 residents so far, with further relocations planned.
More than 1,500 rescue personnel from the military, armed police, fire departments, public security and emergency services have been deployed. Yunnan Province has also dispatched 20,500 relief items, including tents, clothing, quilts and folding beds, to support the affected population. ■
