BAGHDAD, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- A brigadier general and a police officer were killed and four others wounded on Thursday when unidentified gunmen opened fire on a security and municipal team in southern Baghdad, according to Iraqi security authorities.
The incident occurred during an anti-encroachment operation, the Security Media Cell, affiliated with the Iraqi Joint Operations Command, said in a statement. Security forces sealed off the area and arrested a suspect.
The wounded included a federal police officer, two municipality police officers and a municipality employee, it added.
Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi mourned the slain officers, stressing that such attacks "will not deter the government from continuing its efforts to enforce the rule of law." He also ordered security forces to intensify operations to bring the perpetrators to justice. ■
