Across China: Green computing powers diverse industries in China's Inner Mongolia

HOHHOT, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- At a community health center in north China, an artificial intelligence (AI) system is used to undertake early screening instead of a doctor's traditional clinical consultations.

By leveraging big data and algorithms, the system analyzes basic blood test results to flag potential health risks, offering diagnostic support and enabling early medical intervention.

The Haidong Road Community Health Center in Hohhot, capital of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, is one of the pioneering clinics showing how technology is reshaping everyday life, thanks to the region's burgeoning green computing infrastructure.

This AI-driven transformation is taking place across multiple sectors. In classrooms at a school affiliated with Inner Mongolia Normal University, smart blackboards respond to voice commands, while AI systems analyze student performance in real time and create personalized learning plans.

At a smart ecological ranch operated by Yili Group, China's leading dairy producer, in Hohhot, tens of thousands of dairy cows wear smart collars and ear tags that monitor vital signs around the clock, turning traditional herding into a precise, data-driven science.

These smart scenes are powered by a robust computing infrastructure. As a key hub in China's national "East Data, West Computing" project, Inner Mongolia is capitalizing on its abundant renewable energy and favorable climate to build a core base for green computing power.

With rich wind and solar resources, the region generated more than 270 billion kilowatt-hours of renewable power in 2025, ranking among the top nationwide. This clean energy provides a stable power supply for energy-intensive data centers.

As of July 2026, Inner Mongolia's total computing power reached 345,000 PFlops, with intelligent computing accounting for 326,000 PFlops -- a unit representing one quadrillion calculations per second. Notably, over 85 percent of the electricity used by regional data centers comes from green power.

The region has developed a dual-hub strategy centered on Hohhot and Ulanqab. The two centers operate in synergy and complement each other, efficiently handling high-intensity AI computing tasks for both industrial and public sectors.

Inner Mongolia's green computing initiative aligns with China's broader national strategy. The country's 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030) explicitly calls for the coordinated development of green power and computing infrastructure.

Nationally, the results of this green transition are already clear. By the end of 2025, China had built 42 supercomputing clusters, each with more than 10,000 AI acceleration cards. The country's eight national computing hubs now account for more than 80 percent of total intelligent computing capacity.

"Inner Mongolia's practice is a vivid microcosm of China's broader shift toward greener and more intensive computing," said Li Donghong, vice dean at the Institute for Global Industry, Tsinghua University.

By converting clean energy advantage into computing power, the region has not only bridged the gap between eastern China's computing demand and its energy constraints, but also offered a replicable model for the low-carbon development of global AI industry, Li said.
