AMMAN, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- About 220,000 registered Syrian refugees have voluntarily returned from Jordan to Syria between Dec. 8, 2024, and Aug. 24, 2026, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

UNHCR spokesperson Yousef Taha said on Thursday that nearly 45,000 Syrian refugees had returned to Syria since the beginning of 2026, noting that the pace of returns increased following the end of the school year and improving weather conditions.

The average number of weekly returnees stands at around 1,300, while daily peaks have ranged between 200 and 344 returnees, Taha added.

Jordan currently hosts around 375,000 refugees and asylum-seekers registered with the UNHCR, approximately 92 percent of whom are Syrians.
