KABUL, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan's National Disaster Management Authority has signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) valued at 7.31 million U.S. dollars over the past month to enhance nationwide disaster resilience, the authority announced on Wednesday.
The agreements, signed with leading domestic and international partners, aim to strengthen disaster preparedness, mitigate risks from natural hazards, provide urgent assistance to calamity victims, and enhance support for vulnerable populations across the country, said Hafiz Mohammad Yusuf Hammad, spokesperson for the authority.
According to official figures, devastating natural disasters, including heavy rains, windstorms, earthquakes, lightning strikes, roof collapses, landslides, and flash floods, have claimed 351 lives and injured more than 436 people since late March. A total of 24,035 families have been affected nationwide.
The Afghan government has renewed its call for continued financial and technical support from domestic and international partners, stressing the urgent need for a comprehensive national resilience strategy to address the country's deep-rooted economic challenges. ■
