GAZA/JERUSALEM, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- A Palestinian was killed and several others wounded in an Israeli airstrike on the Gaza Strip on Monday.

Local sources and eyewitnesses said that an Israeli drone fired a missile at a tent sheltering displaced people in Deir al-Balah in central Gaza.

Medical sources identified the deceased as Mohammed Abu Asad, without elaborating on his identity.

In a separate statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the death of Asad, identifying him as a member of Hamas' elite Nukhba force and alleging he took part in the Oct. 7, 2023 attack on southern Israel.

A second militant was also struck in the overnight attack, the IDF added, without disclosing his identity or condition.

The military claimed both had been planning attacks against Israeli troops and civilians and were attempting to rebuild Hamas capabilities while violating the ceasefire.

Meanwhile, the Hamas-run Gaza government media office said in a statement that the Israeli army had committed 4,379 violations of the ceasefire agreement since it took effect in October 2025, resulting in 1,286 deaths, 4,257 injuries, and 180 arrests.
