BERLIN, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- Cologne has re-signed Tunisia international Ellyes Skhiri from Bundesliga rival Eintracht Frankfurt, bringing the midfielder back on a contract until June 2028, the Bundesliga side announced on Friday.
The 31-year-old, who previously spent four seasons in Cologne between 2019 and 2023, signed his deal on Friday morning before joining training. He will wear the No. 6 shirt.
Skhiri returns as Cologne reinforce their defensive midfield following Eric Martel's move to Mainz. He becomes the club's second addition in that position after Paul Okon-Engstler.
"We have known Ellyes very well for many years and contact with the club never stopped after his move," managing director Thomas Kessler said. "When putting together our squad, it was important for us to add experience and leadership alongside sporting quality."
Kessler said Skhiri's profile matched Cologne's requirements, citing his experience at domestic and international level and his familiarity with the club.
"He knows what it means to take responsibility here," Kessler added. "With his professional attitude and experience, he will give our team important impulses and, in particular, be an important point of reference for our young players on and off the pitch."
Skhiri said his long-standing connection with Cologne had played a part in his return.
"I am very happy to be back here and immediately saw some familiar faces at the Geissbockheim," he said. "I never lost sight of the club and always stayed in contact with some people."
The midfielder added that he had been speaking with Kessler and coach Rene Wagner for some time and had immediately felt their trust again.
Born in Lunel, France, Skhiri came through Montpellier's youth system and made 123 Ligue 1 appearances before first joining Cologne in 2019. He went on to make 133 competitive appearances and score 20 goals during his initial spell.
After leaving for Frankfurt in 2023, Skhiri made 82 Bundesliga appearances, scoring three goals and providing four assists. He also featured 27 times in European competition, appearing in the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League.
A Tunisia international since 2018, Skhiri has represented his country at the 2018, 2022 and 2026 World Cups. ■
