ISTANBUL, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Türkiye aims to launch a comprehensive phosphate development project in Syria, including phosphate production and processing facilities, Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said on Wednesday.
Bayraktar made the remarks during a visit to Damascus, where Türkiye and Syria signed a memorandum of understanding on phosphate cooperation, according to a written statement from the ministry.
The planned project will cover the development of phosphate fields, construction of an industrial processing facility and a railway to transport phosphate to a port, Bayraktar said.
The memorandum marked the first step toward the project, which is expected to be turned into a commercial agreement in the coming days, he said.
The two countries have significant potential for cooperation in energy and mining, with Türkiye working to advance projects in these sectors as part of Syria's reconstruction and recovery, Bayraktar said.
The minister announced that Türkiye will soon triple its electricity exports to Syria to 800-900 megawatts. ■
