KUALA LUMPUR, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia will implement a comprehensive plan to strengthen controls at the country's entry points with immediate effect, according to Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil on Wednesday.
The plan covers several measures presented by the Home Ministry and Transport Ministry, Fahmi said in a press briefing following the weekly cabinet meeting.
Earlier, Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that the plan would strengthen coordination among agencies and end "siloed" approaches to managing the country's entry points.
Airport security came under scrutiny following several cases involving Malaysians, including the recent arrest of a Malaysian pilot with about 25kg of drugs at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Indonesia.
The cabinet subsequently directed the two ministries to submit a comprehensive plan within two weeks to improve security controls at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
The directive followed government concerns that such incidents could damage Malaysia's reputation and create perceptions of weaknesses in security controls at the airport. ■
