BEIRUT, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Two people were killed and two others injured on Wednesday when a suspicious object believed to have been left by Israeli forces exploded near an earth berm between the towns of Mayfadoun and Zawtar al-Sharqiyah in southern Nabatieh Governorate, the National News Agency (NNA) reported.

The agency gave no further details about the incident.

Earlier, Israeli warplanes carried out a series of airstrikes targeting Ali al-Taher Hill on the outskirts of Nabatieh al-Fawqa, Doha Kfar Remmen and the outskirts of Deir Siriane, according to NNA.

Israeli artillery fire also targeted the outskirts of Wadi Zebqine in the Tyre district, with no casualties reported, the agency said.

Separately, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on Wednesday called for stronger international protection of five historic castles in southern Lebanon after UNESCO added them to its List of World Heritage in Danger, saying the move places a greater responsibility on the international community to safeguard the sites from further attacks.

The five castles are Beaufort Castle, Tebnine Castle, Shaqra Castle, Deir Kifa Castle and Chamaa Castle.
