CANBERRA, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Two people have been charged after police seized drugs and firearms from a South Australian home where four young children were also living.
The South Australia Police said in a statement on Wednesday that detectives executed a search warrant at a home in the town of Angle Vale, 32 km north of Adelaide, on Tuesday evening and located 9.2 kg of methamphetamine, 3.3 kg of cocaine and 232 grams of MDMA.
The drugs, as well as two revolver handguns and 80,000 Australian dollars (about 56,592 U.S. dollars) in cash, were seized, and a 33-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman were arrested.
Police said they were each charged with trafficking in a large commercial quantity of a controlled drug, possessing a prescribed quantity of a controlled precursor, firearms offenses and money laundering.
If convicted, they face maximum penalties of life imprisonment.
Acting assistant police Commissioner Catherine Hilliard told reporters that four children under the age of six were living with the man and woman at the property, noting that police and other government authorities will take necessary steps to maintain the welfare of those children.
She described the drug seizure as one of the most significant in the state's recent history. ■
