HONG KONG, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- A team of four Hong Kong students won two gold medals, one silver medal and an honorable mention, ranking sixth at the 38th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), which was the city's best-ever performance at the competition, according to a press release published on Wednesday by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government.

Christine Choi, secretary for education of the HKSAR government, congratulated the students on their excellent performance. She also extended her gratitude to the school sector for continuously partnering with the education bureau of the HKSAR government to promote digital education and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) education in Hong Kong.

Choi noted that schools have been offering diversified learning opportunities outside the classroom, such as competitions, to build a solid foundation in mathematics, science, and technology. These initiatives help to nurture students' creativity, enabling them to apply their knowledge and skills to solve problems and broaden their horizons.

This year's IOI, held in Uzbekistan, attracted contestants from 92 countries and regions.
