DAMASCUS, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Three workers were killed Tuesday in an explosion at the Baniyas thermal power plant in Syria's coastal Tartous province, state-run Al-Ikhbariya TV reported.
The blast occurred inside the power plant in the city of Baniyas, according to Al-Ikhbariya, without providing further details on the cause of the explosion.
The Syrian Arab News Agency also confirmed an explosion at the facility, saying authorities were working to determine its cause.
No official statement on the cause of the explosion or the extent of damage to the plant has yet been released.
The Baniyas thermal power plant is a major electricity-generating facility on Syria's Mediterranean coast. In August 2021, the plant experienced a major fuel leak that released oil into the Mediterranean Sea. ■
