JAKARTA, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia's external debt rose 4.4 percent year on year to 453.4 billion U.S. dollars in the second quarter of 2026, Bank Indonesia said Tuesday.

Ramdan Denny Prakoso, executive director of the central bank's communications department, said the increase was driven by higher public-sector external debt, including government and central bank debt, while the contraction in private-sector external debt moderated.

Government external debt stood at 216.3 billion dollars, up 2.9 percent year on year, slowing from 3.8 percent growth in the first quarter. The increase was mainly supported by foreign capital inflows into government securities, according to the central bank.

Central bank external debt also increased, driven by higher non-resident holdings of Bank Indonesia Rupiah Securities.

Private-sector external debt stood at 194.6 billion dollars, down 0.6 percent year on year, compared with a 1.3-percent contraction in the previous quarter, mainly due to a smaller decline in external debt held by financial corporations.

Indonesia's external debt-to-GDP ratio stood at 30.6 percent in the second quarter, while long-term debt accounted for 82.1 percent of the total.

Bank Indonesia said the country's external debt structure remained healthy, supported by prudent debt management, with government external borrowing directed toward productive sectors.
