TRIPOLI, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Libyan Prime Minister Abdul-Hamid Dbeibah on Monday dismissed the board of directors of the state-owned General Electricity Company of Libya and appointed a new board amid severe power shortages and load shedding.
The new board, headed by Bashir al-Maraash, assumed its duties after being reconstituted under a decision approved by the company's general assembly at its first ordinary meeting of 2026, Libya Alahrar, a Libyan satellite news and television channel, reported.
The move comes as Libya has experienced repeated partial or total power grid collapses, resulting in widespread electricity outages.
The new board is expected to address challenges including stabilizing the grid, improving the efficiency of power generation, transmission and distribution systems, accelerating maintenance work, and implementing projects to develop the country's electricity sector. ■
