NEW DELHI, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- At least eight people died and more than 20 were injured when a passenger vehicle rammed into a truck coming from the opposite direction in India's central state of Madhya Pradesh late last night, confirmed a local cop over the phone on Tuesday.
The accident was reported in Bhind district, on National Highway No. 719. The death toll was feared to rise since some among the injured were said to be in a critical condition.
All the victims were farm laborers hailing from Lakhimpur Kheri district of the neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh. They were returning home after sowing paddy crop.
According to the police, the driver of the speeding passenger vehicle lost control while trying to avoid stray cattle on the highway, crashing into a truck coming from the opposite direction. ■
