SUVA, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Fiji recorded its highest annual number of newly diagnosed HIV cases in 2025, with 2,016 cases reported, prompting renewed calls for stronger prevention, testing and treatment across the Pacific island nation.
Fiji President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu said Monday the 2025 figure was 27 percent higher than the 1,583 cases recorded in 2024, describing the increase as a serious public health concern which requires urgent action.
Speaking at the Pacific HIV Symposium 2026 in Nadi, Lalabalavu said the actual number of people living with HIV could be higher because some people may still be reluctant to undergo testing, reported Fiji Broadcasting Corporation.
The president said Fiji could not afford to become complacent as HIV transmission continued to increase, stressing the importance of expanding prevention programmes, encouraging more people to test and ensuring those diagnosed can begin treatment early.
The symposium has brought together health professionals, policymakers, community organizations and other stakeholders to discuss HIV prevention, testing, treatment and efforts to reduce stigma surrounding the disease. ■
