WASHINGTON, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- China's Wang Xinyu and Wang Xiyu both came from behind to clinch victories in the women's singles second round at the Cincinnati Open on Sunday.
After losing the first set 6-3, Wang Xinyu bounced back to win the following sets 6-1, 6-4 against Croatia's Donna Vekic. Despite eight double faults, Wang, 24, converted four out of nine break points throughout the match to seal the victory.
Wang will now face world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus who saw off Australia's Talia Gibson 6-2, 7-6(2).
Wang Xiyu defeated 30th seed Leylah Fernandez of Canada 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 to reach the last 32. The 25-year-old will now take on Elina Svitolina of Ukraine.
In other matches, Chinese veteran Zhang Shuai was defeated by American Ann Li 7-5, 6-3, world No. 2 Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan cruised past home player Taylor Townsend 6-3, 6-4, while America's Sloane Stephens upset Austria's Anastasia Potapova 6-2, 6-4. ■
