RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Striker Pedro scored twice as Flamengo romped to a 5-1 away win over Mirassol in Brazil's Serie A on Sunday.
Jorge Carrascal and Luiz Araujo struck either side of halftime for the visitors before Pedro added two goals in the space of 10 second-half minutes.
Samuel Lino gave the Rio de Janeiro outfit a five-goal buffer before Joao Vitor pulled a goal back in the 77th minute.
The result leaves Flamengo second in the 20-team standings with 45 points, three behind leader Palmeiras. Mirassol is 16th, with 23 points from 22 outings.
"We played very well at a place that is difficult," Pedro said after the match. "Our goal was to win this game so that we could narrow the gap between us and Palmeiras."
Elsewhere in Brazil's top flight on Sunday, Cruzeiro won 2-1 at Corinthians, Vitoria edged to a 1-0 home win over Botafogo, Santos cruised to a 3-0 away win over Vasco, Atletico Mineiro prevailed 3-0 at home to Gremio and Bahia drew 3-3 at Chapecoense. ■
