China restores abandoned mines, revives rural communities

Once scarred by decades of quarrying, the mountains of Weihai in east China's Shandong Province have been transformed through more than 20 years of ecological restoration. Former mining sites have been turned into green landscapes and tourist attractions, creating jobs and new opportunities for local communities. The transformation highlights how restoring damaged ecosystems can also support rural development. ■
