YANGON, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar is stepping up efforts to conserve forests and expand tree cover as part of measures to mitigate climate change, the state-owned daily The Global New Light of Myanmar reported on Sunday.
A total of 21.37 million trees have been planted across the country during this rainy season, which began in mid-May and continues through October, said President Min Aung Hlaing at a national tree-growing ceremony held on Saturday in Dekkhinathiri township in Nay Pyi Taw.
He called for the cultivation of perennial crops, such as bamboo and rubber, in suitable and available areas, saying they would contribute to greening and environmental conservation while supporting the national economy. ■
