UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Violence continues to take a heavy toll on civilians and displace people across Sudan, UN humanitarians warned on Wednesday.
In Blue Nile state, more than 20 civilians were killed and many others injured on Tuesday in clashes in Geisan town in the southeast of the country, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in its daily media briefing, quoting local sources.
Increased violence also displaced about 2,500 people of about 500 households from Geisan to other locations of the town and even across the border to Ethopia, the office said, citing the International Organization for Migration.
In North Kordofan, multiple waves of drone strikes were reported across the state capital of El Obeid on Wednesday when continuing attacks and insecurity in northern parts of the state were driving further displacement into the city, said OCHA.
"Partners estimate that about 15,000 families have been displaced to El Obeid over the past three weeks," the office said. "The continued influx is putting more pressure on already overstretched displacement sites and basic services."
OCHA calls on all parties to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, and to allow aid to reach people quickly, safely and without obstruction, for as long as needed.
The office also urges donors to provide additional funding for the humanitarian response. This year's humanitarian appeal for Sudan remains about 41 percent funded, with 1.2 billion U.S. dollars received out of the 2.9 billion required. ■
