KABUL, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Four irrigation canals have been completed and put into operation in northeastern Afghanistan's Badakhshan province at a cost of more than 120 million afghanis (about 1.9 million U.S. dollars), provincial government office said Tuesday.
The projects were implemented to improve water resource management, expand irrigation facilities and boost agricultural production, according to the office.
The newly completed canals are expected to improve farmers' access to irrigation water, promote the efficient use of water resources and support agricultural activities in the targeted areas, the government office said.
Farmers in several parts of the province continue to face shortages of irrigation water and have called for further investment in irrigation infrastructure and better management of river water resources to ensure sufficient water for agricultural land. ■
