ZAGREB, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- A passenger train and a freight train collided on Saturday morning near Skrinjari, about 60 kilometers east of the Croatian capital Zagreb, leaving six passengers severely injured and 14 others with minor injuries.

The crash occurred at approximately 10:05 a.m. local time (0805 GMT) on a section of the track between the Sveti Ivan Zabno and Gradec stations, according to the national broadcaster Croatian Radiotelevision (HRT).

There were 28 people aboard the passenger train when the collision happened, including 26 passengers, a train driver and a conductor. The impact left several carriages of the train severely damaged.

Emergency medical personnel and firefighters rushed to the scene shortly after the collision, while police cordoned off the area. The railway line was temporarily closed to all traffic.

The Croatian Ministry of Health confirmed later in the day that a total of 20 people were injured. All the wounded have been transported to hospitals in nearby major cities for treatment.

An investigation into the cause of the collision is underway.
