SOFIA, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- An unidentified drone entered Bulgarian airspace from Romania and exploded shortly after crossing into Bulgarian territory on Saturday, Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev said.

The incident occurred at 8:10 a.m. local time (0510 GMT) in a sunflower field about 200 meters from the former Kardam border checkpoint between Bulgaria and Romania, and about 1 km from a Bulgarian compressor station on the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline, Radev said.

Noting the loud explosion and thick black smoke, Radev said, "It is certain that the drone had a solid amount of explosive."

"There are no casualties or damage to buildings," he added.

"We now have pictures of the drone. Since it was obviously damaged by the explosion, we can't say what type of drone it is yet," he said. "But it's not a toy drone. It's a larger drone."

The drone was not detected or identified while flying through either Romanian or Bulgarian airspace, he said.
