COLOMBO, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- At least two people died and several others were injured following the unrest at the Kuruwita Prison in Sri Lanka, police said on Friday.
Police said tensions first erupted at the prison on Thursday night, and prison authorities initially brought the situation under control.
However, unrest broke out again among inmates on Friday morning, prompting prison officers to use tear gas to restore order, police said.
A group of inmates also damaged the prison hospital during the unrest, according to prison authorities.
The incident is the latest in a string of disturbances across Sri Lanka's overcrowded prison system over the past months.
Sri Lanka has strengthened security at prisons, while the government is also considering measures to reduce severe overcrowding. ■
