CARACAS, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Venezuela's main Simon Bolivar International Airport, which serves the capital Caracas, has resumed commercial cargo operations after services were suspended due to damage caused by earthquakes in late June, Transportation Minister Francisco Garces said Wednesday.
The initial phase of the airport's operational recovery was marked by the arrival of the first cargo flight from Panama following weeks of repair work with international assistance, Garces said in a post on Instagram, where he shared a video showing the arrival of a UniWorld Air Cargo flight.
He described the resumption of cargo operations as an important step in restoring the country's logistics network.
On July 31, the Transportation Ministry announced that operations at the Simon Bolivar International Airport would gradually resume.
"We reaffirm our commitment to providing users with efficient and safe services in compliance with national and international civil aviation regulations," the ministry said in a statement.
The June 24 earthquakes severely damaged the airport's facilities, forcing the suspension of operations and the rerouting of air traffic to alternative airports in the country. ■
