DOHA, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Qatar and Saudi Arabia signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Thursday to strengthen cooperation in nuclear safety and radiation protection, according to a statement issued by Qatar's Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.
The MoU was signed during a meeting between Qatari Minister of Environment and Climate Change Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie and Chief Executive Officer of the Saudi Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Commission Khalid bin Abdulaziz Al Issa, who is visiting Doha with an accompanying delegation.
According to the statement, the areas of cooperation include nuclear security and safety, radiation safety and protection, oversight of nuclear facilities and radiation practices, preparedness and response to cross-border nuclear and radiological emergencies, and the exchange of information, scientific research, studies, expertise and technical documentation, among others.
The MoU also provides for the exchange of specialists through scientific and technical visits and training programs, the provision of technical assistance, the establishment of joint working groups to implement agreed studies and projects, and the formation of a joint committee to prepare cooperation programs and oversee their implementation.
The MoU aims to regulate and further develop bilateral cooperation in nuclear safety and radiation protection in accordance with the laws and regulations in force in both countries, according to the statement. ■
