BUENOS AIRES, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Former Argentina striker Martin Palermo was named manager of Platense on Wednesday as the club seeks to recover from a poor start to the season.
The 52-year-old replaces Walter Zunino, who was sacked after the club's 4-0 home defeat to Talleres in Argentina's top flight on Monday.
He agreed to a deal that runs until December 2028, the club said in a statement on its official website.
It will be Palermo's second spell as Platense's head coach, having also been in charge in 2022 and 2023 when he oversaw 17 wins, 12 draws and 17 losses.
Platense is currently last in Group A of Argentina's Clausura tournament standings, having drawn one and lost two of its first three games of the campaign.
Palermo turned to management in 2012 after a playing career that included 15 caps for Argentina and a record 236 goals for Boca Juniors.
His most recent managerial job was with Brazil's Fortaleza, whom he left last December. ■
