VIENTIANE, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Laos has issued a warning for people to stay alert for flash floods and landslides as prolonged heavy rains continue to affect several areas, with Khammuan province already experiencing flooding.

Local authorities in Khounkham district of Khammuan province on Wednesday inspected flood-affected areas and monitored the rising water situation caused by several days of persistent rainfall. The inspection found that water levels in rivers and streams had increased significantly, causing flooding in rice fields, homes, and shops.

Several roads were also damaged, disrupting transportation. In some areas, water continues to flow across roads, making travel difficult and unsafe.

Authorities have instructed village officials and relevant agencies to monitor water levels around the clock, prepare evacuation plans for residents in vulnerable areas, and coordinate urgent repairs to damaged roads to restore access as soon as possible.

The flood situation in Khounkham district remains a concern, particularly in riverside areas, low-lying locations, and places affected by road erosion. Residents have been advised to closely follow official weather updates and warnings and remain prepared to evacuate if conditions worsen.

Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology under the Lao Ministry of Agriculture and Environment issued a warning on Wednesday that widespread thunderstorms, moderate to heavy rainfall, and occasional strong winds are expected to continue in some areas. The department identified 30 districts across 10 provinces as being at high risk of flash floods and landslides.

Authorities have urged local officials and residents in risk areas to stay alert, monitor weather forecasts and water-level updates, and take necessary precautions to protect lives and property.
