HANOI, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Prolonged heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms has wreaked havoc in Vietnam's northern province of Tuyen Quang, leaving one person dead and causing an estimated 15 billion Vietnamese dong (about 589,800 U.S. dollars) in damage, the Vietnam News Agency reported Thursday.
According to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment, the victim was struck by lightning while working in a field.
The downpours damaged 96 houses, flooded dozens of hectares of cropland and aquaculture ponds, and triggered landslides at 42 locations along local roads, disrupting traffic, said the report.
Local authorities have erected warning signs in hazardous areas and evacuated residents from locations at high risk of landslides. ■
