Singapore retail sales up 4 pct year-on-year in June

SINGAPORE, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's retail sales rose 4 percent year-on-year in June, accelerating from the 2.9 percent increase recorded in May, the Department of Statistics said on Wednesday.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, retail sales increased 1 percent in June from the previous month, the department said in a report.

Total retail sales were estimated at 4.2 billion Singapore dollars (3.28 billion U.S. dollars) in June, with online retail sales accounting for an estimated 16.4 percent of the total, up from 15.3 percent in May.

Most retail industries posted year-on-year growth. Recreational goods recorded the largest increase, rising 11.4 percent, followed by watches and jewelry, which grew 10.5 percent.

The department also said sales of food and beverage services fell 2.3 percent year-on-year in June, reversing the 0.1 percent increase in May. On a seasonally adjusted basis, food and beverage services sales declined 2 percent from the previous month.

Total sales of food and beverage services were estimated at 1.5 billion Singapore dollars in June, with online sales accounting for an estimated 20.2 percent of the total.
