ISLAMABAD, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan aims to increase the share of clean electricity in its national power mix to 90 percent by 2035, according to Federal Minister for Energy (Power Division) Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari.
Addressing a conference here on Tuesday, Leghari said the government would focus on battery energy storage systems (BESS), domestic manufacturing and regulatory reforms to strengthen energy security, read a statement from his ministry.
He said clean sources, including hydropower, nuclear, wind and solar, currently account for about 55 percent of electricity generation, while nearly 38 gigawatts of distributed solar have been installed through consumer-led investment.
The minister said battery storage was essential to shift surplus daytime solar power to peak hours and reduce reliance on imported fuels.
He announced a National Steering Committee on BESS, along with technical and regulatory working groups, to identify priority projects and develop a national storage policy.
The government is also preparing incentives for domestic battery manufacturing and has approved pilot storage projects at distribution companies, he added. ■
