S. Korea's imported car sales up 14.3 pct in July

SEOUL, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's imported car sales rose in double figures in July due to strong demand for electric vehicles and German luxury models, industry data showed Wednesday.

The number of newly registered imported passenger cars here expanded 14.3 percent from a year earlier to 30,976 in July, according to the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA).

For the first seven months of this year, 215,008 imported vehicles were sold, up 30.1 percent compared to the same period of last year.

U.S. automaker Tesla took a top spot in terms of automotive sales here among foreign companies by selling 10,237 units.

German automaker BMW came next with the sale of 6,533 units, followed by German carmaker Mercedes-Benz with 3,959 units and Chinese carmaker BYD with 2,846 units.

The number of European models sold here was 14,841 last month, taking up 47.9 percent of the total. U.S., Chinese and Japanese brands recorded market shares of 33.8 percent, 9.2 percent and 9.1 percent each.
