AMMAN, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Foreign ministers and representatives of Arab and Islamic countries gathered in Amman on Wednesday and jointly condemned Israeli policies and measures in Jerusalem and its holy sites.
Speaking at the meeting, Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi accused Israel of entrenching its "occupation" of East Jerusalem through settlement expansion, land annexation, property confiscation and restrictions imposed on Jerusalemites.
Safadi said Israel's measures were targeting Jerusalem's identity and the historical and legal status quo of its holy sites, particularly Al-Aqsa Mosque, warning that continued violations could fuel religious tensions.
In a statement adopted at the meeting, participants condemned what they described as Israeli policies aimed at altering the Arab, Islamic, and Christian identity of occupied Jerusalem. They also reaffirmed their position that East Jerusalem is part of the occupied Palestinian territory and the capital of the State of Palestine.
Participants called on the international community and the UN Security Council to act immediately to halt Israeli measures in Jerusalem and its holy sites, and agreed to establish a mechanism, including a media platform, to document and expose violations.
The meeting was attended by foreign ministers and representatives of Arab states, as well as Indonesia, Pakistan, Türkiye and Malaysia.
Thousands of Israeli settlers, accompanied by government officials and under heavy police protection, stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the Old City of East Jerusalem late last month, triggering widespread condemnation. ■
