WELLINGTON, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck the area near the town of Te Araroa on New Zealand's North Island on Sunday evening, the country's earthquake monitoring agency reported.

The tremor, with a depth of 36 km, occurred 10 km south of Te Araroa at 8:35 p.m. local time, according to GeoNet.

There have been frequent outbursts of quakes in New Zealand these days, including two ranging in magnitude from 5.2 to 5.9 near Te Anau on the South Island.
