YEREVAN, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Nikol Pashinyan was reappointed prime minister of Armenia on Sunday, hours after the government formally resigned as the newly elected National Assembly convened for its first sitting.
Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan signed a decree appointing Pashinyan under Article 149 of the Armenian Constitution. Pashinyan was nominated by the ruling Civil Contract party, which won 64 of the 105 seats in the National Assembly in the June 7 parliamentary elections.
Earlier Sunday, Pashinyan submitted the government's resignation in accordance with Article 158 of the Constitution, which mandates the government to step down on the day the newly elected parliament holds its first session.
The resignation and reappointment are constitutional procedures for forming a new government after parliamentary elections. Ministers will remain in office until a new cabinet is formed. ■
